  • This Week’s Readings

Hello hello. Hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. I did, right up until I fell ill, ugh. Hoping to get better soon because I have an excitingly play-heavy week: I’m seeing Richard III with Kevin Spacey at BAM on Tuesday (check out this preview, oh my lord) and on Thursday I’m seeing Relatively Speaking, three one-act comedies by Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May. There’s so much amazing theater in this city and I don’t always take advantage—well, mainly because I don’t have the funds, but there are always good deals to be found (e.g. Richard III tix start at $25). My friend Jesse North blogs about theater at Stage Rush (which caused him to get picked up by Broadway.com!). I’d recommend it as a great source if you’re in or coming to NY and looking to get your theater on.

Back to literary events! There are some neat ones this week, as always…

MONDAY: Ben Marcus (who Michael Chabon likens to Ballard, Kafka and Mary Shelley) will read from his most recent work, The Flame Alphabet, and discuss with John Freeman.

TUESDAY: Elmore Leonard will discuss his newest novel, Raylan, with CFA director Jonathan Santlofer. [Center for Fiction]

WEDNESDAY: “Behind the Longreads” will feature non-fiction readings from New York editors Dan P. Lee, Jessica Pressler and Wesley Yang, and will be moderated by EIC Adam Moss.
    [Housing Works]

THURSDAY: Yay! Largehearted Boy’s 10th anniversary will feature cupcakes and birthday-related readings by Emma Straub (Other People We Married) and Jennifer Gilmore (Something Red). [WORD]

FRIDAY: The Brooklyn Writers Space Reading Series. It’s a bit of a mystery who will be reading this month, but the series provides reliably awesome writers. [BookCourt]

SATURDAY: Melissa Kantor’s release party for The Darlings in Love. According to the bookstore’s invite, there will be: “wine, cheese, cute boys, broken hearts, cookies, teen romance, readings, crackers, happy endings, and possibly olives.” [Community Bookstore]
